Art Therapy in a Children’s Community
Later edition: Schocken Books, 1977
Kramer’s first major book grew out of her work at the Wiltwyck School for Boys and focuses on the role art could play inside a residential treatment setting. Rather than treating art simply as an activity or diagnostic aid, the book documents Kramer’s early effort to describe art-making as an active part of treatment and community life.
The book is especially useful for understanding the beginning of Kramer’s professional vocabulary. It connects her work with children, institutional practice, and her developing conviction that the creative process itself could carry therapeutic value. It is a foundational publication and an obvious starting point for readers interested in how her ideas developed.
